Participatory approaches to (geo)science range from crowd-powered discovery within astronomy to Indigenous-led aquaculture regeneration. Regardless of context and focus, successful projects owe their achievements to the participation of many individuals. This session will explore what motivates and rewards all members of participatory science initiatives - the scientists and non-scientists. Our purpose is twofold: draw attention to the success of participatory methods in generating new scientific knowledge and raise awareness of the rich and varied rewards for scientists and non-scientists alike from these efforts. We invite submissions from participatory projects to share their research, their science successes, and their reflections - backed by data or stories - on the “why” of participatory research. What are the rewards for scientists and nonscientists? How do rewards balance any challenges involved? How do the rewards and challenges change through time? What kinds of reciprocity and relationships inform and emerge from participatory science?
