This session will cover a broad range of observations, theoretical developments and numerical simulations of dynamos in Earth and other planets. We solicit contributions covering dynamo simulations, modern field observations, excursions and reversals, and records from deep time and their implications for Earth and planetary evolution. Observations and time series derived from a broad range of materials are both important in their own right and can contribute to global syntheses, continuous time-varying models, and statistical representations of paleosecular variations. Planet-wide modeling and regional records provide important constraints on the temporal evolution of magnetic fields. New modeling strategies for paleomagnetic, direct ground, and satellite observations can offer improved insight and integrations with the products of numerical simulations. We anticipate wide-ranging discussion of all these topics.
