This session focuses on Western United States hydroclimate, fire activity, and temperatures. Proxy methods used to reconstruct such changes involve isotopic and biogeochemical measurements in various archives including plant wax, speleothems, paleosols, pedogenic carbonates, tree rings, lake sediments, loess deposits, ice cores and ocean margin sediments. Each offers reconstructions with different spatial and temporal coverage. Climate model simulations of paleoclimate provide strenuous tests of models used for future predictions, evaluating model sensitivity and skill in reproducing climate shifts across changing paleotopography, greenhouse gas forcing and glacial-interglacial changes. The session aims to connect scientists with various proxy data and model insights in a forum for collective progress on the challenge of understanding the past and predicting the future. We welcome contributions on proxy reconstruction, data synthesis, model simulation, and proxy-model integration. Contributions on related topics from other regions or with a global focus are welcome.
