In regions facing increasing impacts from geohazards, there is growing interest in using collaborative and participatory science approaches for engaging communities. Such involvement enhances community capacity by strengthening collaboration among Tribal environmental staff, scientists, educators, elders, youth, non-profits, and federal, state, and local agencies. Outcomes from collaborations include enhanced environmental change prediction, warning system development, community safety strategies, and disaster relief plans that increase community resilience. In this session, we seek presentations from Tribal leaders and members, researchers, educators, and managers worldwide who engage in collaborative approaches to equip communities with resources, connections, and tools to address a wide range of geohazards. Geohazards of interest include, but are not limited to, flooding, coastal erosion, landslides, tsunamis, snow avalanches, and fire. Of particular interest are community-directed studies that work to sustain traditional ways of life, connect with youth, and support reciprocity practices as part of the scientific and community engagement process.
