Coastal and estuarine ecosystems are important for ecosystem health, carbon cycling, water quality, and hazard mitigation. But, increasing exposure to transient disturbances such as hurricanes, storm surges, and extreme rainfall events can quickly alter these ecosystem functions. Combined with long-term stressors such as sea-level rise and land-use changes, these complex interactions can shape the long-term resistance and resilience of the coastal systems across the land-estuary-ocean (LEO) continuum. This session invites interdisciplinary contributions that examine physical, ecological, and biogeochemical responses to disturbance events across climate zones and coastal morphologies. We particularly encourage studies integrating field observations, satellite data, and numerical models to investigate hydrologic connectivity, wetland loss, estuarine dynamics, and recovery timescales. Comparative and regional assessments that inform broader coastal resilience frameworks and stakeholder engagement are especially welcome. By highlighting system-scale responses to extreme events, this session aims to advance predictive understanding and support adaptive management strategies in a changing climate.
