South Asia—home to over two billion people—is increasingly vulnerable to intensifying weather and climate extremes that threaten lives, livelihoods, public health, agriculture, and infrastructure. This session brings together researchers to share recent findings on the dynamics, drivers, and impacts of extreme weather and climate events across the region. We invite contributions focused on:(a) Climate variability and extremes influenced by local processes—including mountain meteorology—and large-scale teleconnections (e.g., ENSO, IOD, MJO), based on observations and models; (b) Case studies of tropical cyclones, floods, droughts, terrestrial and marine heatwaves, landslides, and compound events; (c) Interactions among climate variability, anthropogenic influences, community exposure, and resilience strategies; (d) Integrated approaches using models, observations, and reanalyses to assess current and future hazards, including glacier melt and glacial lake outburst floods. This session advances scientific understanding of weather and climate extremes, addresses escalating challenges, and supports decision-makers in building a more resilient South Asia.
