Effective decision-making for environmental problems at local, national, and international levels depends on availability and use of scientific data. Two innovations for synthesizing data and deploying it so that it is accessible and useable for decisionmakers are assessments and public-private partnerships. This session will discuss how each of these approaches have evolved in recent years and key challenges. For assessments, lessons learned from the Fifth National Climate Assessment and global reports from IPCC and IPBES highlight advancements in localized projections and scenarios and the importance of centering Indigenous and local knowledge, among other topics, while challenges include recent cancellation of several national assessments for largely political reasons. For public-private partnerships, more decentralized and remote data collection have become possible, facilitating data-sharing and collaboration among diverse stakeholders but raising collaboration challenges. Across both topics, this session will focus on best practices, key considerations, lessons learned, and future directions.
