The eruption of Hunga volcano, Tonga, on January 15, 2022 was unique in modern history not only because it was the most powerful explosive eruption in more than a century, but also because the broad range of observational platforms that provided real-time data were accessible to the global scientific community for collaborative studies. Since the time of the eruption, interdisciplinary oceanographic and geophysical studies have revealed deeper processes. Another topic inviting similarly interdisciplinary study is magmatic processes in extensional tectonic settings. Thus, we welcome contributions from a broad range of disciplines highlighting data from oceanographic, seismic, magnetic, petrologic, and other studies that reveal the inner workings of Hunga and similar volcanoes. We also encourage abstract submissions related to monitoring, modelling, ecosystem response and recovery after destructive events, comparative analyses across extensional provinces, and coupling of volcanic and tectonic processes.
