Going out to sea as a student or early career scientist or teacher can be transformative in many ways. By providing role models, mentors, science inspiration, techniques, research processes, networks and adventure, sea-going experiences have the power to shape the next generation of ocean scientists. A number of programs sponsored by both federal agencies and private non-profits have focused efforts on such early career sea-going exploratory programs over the past decade, to grow and develop the ocean and geoscience workforce. These programs have had significant impacts on student trajectories, career awareness, science identity, workforce preparedness, and overall confidence. They have led to the growth of robust mentor and peer networks, which in turn have positive impacts on the field as a whole. This session invites contributions from both program organizers and participants to share their experiences, impacts and data.
