The Indo-Pacific warm pool plays a crucial role in the coupled ocean-atmosphere dynamics of the tropics, driving climate phenomena such as ENSO and longer-term climate variability. This region is strongly influenced by ocean circulation in the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans, which exchange mass and energy through the Indonesian seas. Climate systems over the two basins interact via both oceanic channels and atmospheric bridges. The region is highly vulnerable to marine environmental hazards linked to ocean and climate fluctuations. This session invites contributions on a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to: variability in Indo-Pacific ocean circulation; the inter-basin climate interactions; tropical-extratropical exchanges; western boundary currents; the Indonesian Throughflow; marine heatwaves; upwelling and storm surges; flood and drought events; ocean salinity variability; ocean mixing processes; and their impacts on monsoon and typhoon predictability across timescales from diurnal to centennial, particularly under global warming.
