Science can play a key role in democratic societies in developing more effective and equitable public policies on topics from pandemic preparedness to climate resilience to emerging technologies and beyond. But to do so, scientific advice is needed to provide relevant, credible, and timely evidence to decision makers, optimally within governmental systems that facilitate its access and use. In this session, we seek to highlight research and case studies that illustrate pathways for science to inform policy, whether at the local, state, or federal level. We welcome submissions both from those who study the interface between science and public policy and those who engage in practice, including natural and social scientists, policy makers, Indigenous and community leaders, and issue advocates. Abstracts may either focus broadly on the use of science in policy processes or address specific topics such as climate change, natural hazards, and sustainability.
