The Asahiko Taira International Scientific Ocean Drilling Research Prize (Taira Prize) recognizes “outstanding transdisciplinary research accomplishment in ocean drilling” and is awarded annually to one honoree.

Established in 2014 through a partnership between the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU), the prize is funded by a generous donation from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Management International (IODP-MI). The award honors Dr. Asahiko Taira of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, whose 40-year career spans tectonics, paleoceanography, and ocean drilling science. Dr. Taira has been recognized with awards such as the Geological Society of Japan Award and a fellowship from the Geological Society of America.
