Across all career stages, scientists are seeking opportunities to apply their expertise beyond the bench, especially in roles that influence policy, support evidence-based decision-making, or provide alternative career paths during times of uncertainty. In this panel-style session, you’ll hear from scientists working in a broad landscape of science policy careers – inside and outside of government – and the skills scientists can develop to move into these roles. Whether you’re starting out, mid-career, or simply curious about what else is out there, this session will offer valuable insight tailored to the needs of today’s scientistic workforce. Through real-world stories, guidance, and insights, attendees will come away with a clearer picture of what is possible and how to take the next steps.Panelists include Kevin Reed, Associate Provost for Climate and Sustainability Programming, Stony Brook University and Chief Climate Scientist, New York Climate Exchange; Deborah Glickson, Senior Program Director, Earth Systems and Resources, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Holly Mayton, Science, Technology, and Policy Partnerships Lead at John Deere; and Anna Normand, Specialist in Natural Resources Policy and Acting Research Manager for the Agriculture and Food Supply Section, Congressional Research Service (CRS).
