Now more than ever communities are grappling with a host of environmental and geoscience-related concerns such as extreme heat, natural disasters, flooding, pollution, food insecurity, and more. As a scientist, you have skills, resources, and expertise that can be invaluable to communities. But ethical community engaged science requires not just the technical know-how but also a commitment to collaboration, shared decision-making, and developing relationships. Getting started can feel daunting. In this learning session, we'll share some best practices for public engagement, practice some skills necessary for working with broader publics, and learn about how to get started co-developing a community science project that puts communities first. Attendees will also be introduced to AGU resources and opportunities for volunteering with community science.
