In 2024 the Community Air Monitoring Reliability Act (CAMRA) was passed by the Legislature of Louisiana and signed into law. This law is intended to limit the use air quality data collected by community monitoring programs by restricting data which can be used to allege violations of the clean air act to only come from federal equivalence method (FEM) or federal reference method (FRM) based measurements. This limitation effectively excludes lower cost sensors as well as research grade sensors from use in discussion of air quality issues and potential violations. This Town Hall will discuss the importance of community-based monitoring, the legal questions arising from CAMRA, and current challenges for community and researchers to effectively monitor air pollutants in Louisiana to better quantify the air quality and health burdens of communities.
